Sounds like identity theft to me. Your W2's would have all your personal information (SS # etc) I would think background check should only require confirmation of employment, which they would get through contacting your former employers.

this happened to me during a job search five years ago and I took it as a sign of an unprofessional employer. maybe it is more common now? what is the need to verify salary history or dates of employment, beyond providing references? I think they are overstepping but I understand you are just trying to go along. If you are qualified for a job and have accepted a salary, why does it matter what your last job paid?

BTW, a lot of employers these days want a salary history, so I would not think this is unusual.

OP here. I did provide a salary history to the actual company. I found two emails from a recruiter that discussed hiring date and confirmation of my last termination date. I provided those instead. Guess we shall see...

OP, this just happened to me. It's not necessarily the requirement of the company you are going to work for, it's the third party background checker's requirement. That is how they do their due diligence before submitting a report to the company.

If you can't find the W2s, like me, just go back and tell them that you do not keep old W2s and have made every effort to find them to no avail. I told them this and they noted it in their report. I still passed the background check and the company that hired me didn't ask for further documentation.

p.s. I called my previous employers and one of them was able to send me a copy of my W2.

They probably ask for w2s since everyone is required to keep tax records for an extended period. As you point out you don't keep pay stubs or other documentation. What about offer letters? Insurance claims? Business credit card bills? Anything showing you were emotes by the company in a given year?

I thought about doing that, but there really are no dates on the W-2s. Plus it looks like I'm hiding my salary history. I googled it and it says in most states, previous companies will not disclose salary. I feel like that is what the company is trying to get to it without having to directly ask for proof of salary. It's the deception that bothers me and makes me not want to disclose.

There may not be a specific date but if you said you started a job in 2008 and have a W2 from that company for 2008 it shows that you were employed as indicated. They may not care so much if you started in March vs August.

They are trying to verify that you were working for company X when you said you were. One way is to provide a W-2 for the first and last year of employment. Or a pay stub from the first month or the last month of employment. Basically, they are trying to establish that you were employed during those times. They need documenation. They cannot just call your prior employer and have them confirm that you were employed at that time unless the employer is willing to provide them legitimate written documentation that you were employed during those times. Most employers will verbally confirm, but not confirm in writing.

So, find something in writing that confirms your actual dates of employment. And like the PP said, if you are concerned with the information on any document, you can blot out said information before you copy it to send to them.

Thanks!

You are right I just pulled one and it doesn't have any dates on it.

This is what the email requests-
"Documentation that verifies your starting and ending dates of employment for XXXXXX, Inc.. Acceptable forms of documentation may include W-2 forms, pay stubs and/or 1099 forms. If this is your current employer, provide a copy of your most recent paycheck stub along with a document verifying your start date."

I don't save pay stubs. I try to remain as paperless as possible. It is very strange.

I have accepted a job offer, continent on a background check. This is a non-government related company and position. The third party conducting the background check has now requested that I provide start and ending W-2s for my last two jobs so that they can verify dates of employment. They did not mention verifying income. I provided the phone numbers of both companies so that they can verify and receive references. I do not understand why they NEED the W-2s. No, I didn't lie about salary history, but it is a pain to go through boxes in my garage to find a W-2 for a jobs that I started a number of years ago. Can't they verify the start day through the Human Resources departments?

Any thoughts?
