I recommend that you ask your friends or post on a local list serve. The best recommendations I have received were from real estate agents because their taxes can be complicated.

We found the price for accountant services in the D.C. area to be very expensive. We use an out of state accountant (referral from family members). With online tools and efiling, it's not essential to have an accountant in the same state as you unless you have unique state circumstances. It has worked well for us and very reasonably priced.

DH is self-employed - sort of. I have a home-based business on the side of my FT job. We own our home and have a rental property. Nothing too elaborate. We need an accountant who can help us not only do our taxes but also help us figure out what we should be deducting, how we can decrease our taxes, etc. We don't need this person to be a financial planner, but we want someone who can advise us on tax issues. We are not looking to avoid paying the taxes we owe. I have spoken to a couple of people and haven't gotten a good feeling from them.
