I'm not familiar with the Mclean School approach so I won't draw a comparison. There is a nice combination of group work and independent work that involves self-correction. For example, in a recent assignment for a class, students worked in groups to come up with a lesson plan to cover a topic. It had to contain specific learning goals, they had to take into consideration various learning styles, as well as come up with an assessment tool to ensure the students understood. This demonstrates how students are active participants in their learning and not "lectured" to and we like that.

NP here -- 17 is pretty good for the "largest" class a student has in middle school in a private.

Is 17 small for private school?

We have a child in the Middle School and we are really happy with the balance between athletics, arts, and academics. The jazz band is top notch. Class sizes are small (I think her biggest has 17 students) and many of the teachers have years of experience, with a few young/fresh teachers in the mix. We like the "social curriculum" with the advisories and the new club offerings. The school is much more diverse (racially, economically) than the local public school she would attend, which is also a plus.

How is the learning student centered?. Is it simular to the Mclean school?.

My DS is a new middle school student at Bullis and we love it. Bullis doesn't always get flattering comments on this board but we have had a great first year experience. They have a wonderful approach to student centered learning, a fantastic Arts program and a competitive sports environment. All of which we were looking for in a school. If I had to choose what I like most about Bullis, it would be the teachers and the curriculum. My son's teachers are a dynamic group of educators that make their subject area fun and exciting. The content is challenging yet not overwhelming and the lines of communication are always open. They keep their Haiku sites up to date so parents can see what's being covered in class and the homework expectations for the week. As well as upcoming quizzes and tests. Overall, we are very pleased.
