We've had 3 kids play CYO basketball, and at least in Virginia, the first year they typically play at their home school's gym for half the games, so travel is minimized. The travel may be to some of the more far-flung parishes, but it's not terrible. The kids do have fun. Agree with PP that top teams can be very competitive - but in 4th grade the teams (if there is more than one team) should be equally weighted.

My sons had a great time playing CYO basketball. Typically in the larger churches there is enough interest that up to 3 teams may be formed for each grade. The top teams from these churches can be very competitive as some boys play on travel teams as well. You may do some travelling due to the size of the diocese and depending on what division you play in.

My son will be eligible for CYO basketball next year. How does the level of play compare to the local recreational leagues? Is there a lot of traveling?
