I think it's harder for us parents to recover than our kids. I had one kid who didn't get in and one who did.

My son was well above the mean for Math and non-verbal and below for verbal and got in.

I suggest you go back and look at the letter/report. There is NO mention of mean scores. This is not released by MCPS. The median is the only variance released. Therefore, you have no knowledge about your son's score related to mean scores.

median is the score where half the people have scores above and half the people have scores below.

if they are giving you the median of the children who were accepted to the program, then half of the accepted students had a higher score and half the accepted students had a lower score

if they are giving you the median of all the children who took the test, then half of the students taking the test scored higher and half scored lower.

The mean would be the average of all scores.

Again, Cut-Off is different than Median. I do not remember if Mean is shared? But, in statistics mean and median are two different things,


You need to be above the Cut-Off for the particular center. You may fall above the median or below. You need to be above the cut-off for all 3 sections. If you are just below the cut-off then you will likely be in the waiting list.

Sure. The median is not the same at all HGCs. It is much higher at Cold Spring HGC was the point being made. The range and 95% confidence intervals are not presented on the reports but the poster is correct. It may be more difficult to make the cut with those scores -- even if below the median.

In the 2011-12 testing year, there were 65 verbal questions, 60 quantative questions, and 65 nonverbal questions (not that I know what each type of question looked like!)

My child was accepted to Clearspring. The letter shows the score, median and correct out of total. She missed 2 of verbal (score of 139 - median was 126), 10 of quantative (score of 118, meadian was 127), and 4 of nonverbal (score of 131, median was 128).

So you can miss more than 10 and still get in. And assuming quantative was math, my child's weakest area on the test, that doesn't mean too much in the practical application either. DC was assigned to grade 6 math (with 7th extensions) skipping another grade in math for 4th grade.

It's too early to worry about the test. (I say this, when my child took the middle school test this year and I'm quite anxious about it. Feel like I will do a happy dance when the letter comes, either way, just because I finally know!)

The tester sounds about right.

On average about how many questions did the kids that got accepted get wrong? I know I've heard of some perfect scores but this can't be the norm sinc the average scores are short of the maximum.

My kid said the tester said "most kids" get at least 10 questions wrong. He wasn't sure what that meant.
