Prior poster- I should mention that my parents criticize us for not sending our KIDS to private school.

Also I should also mention that my kids do not care for their grandparents at all. They expect my kids to run towards them, full of hugs and kisses. Um, they barely know who you are, you ignore them all the time, and you have forgotten their birthdays more than once. I don't blame them for not feeling especially close to either set of grandparents. Of course, the grandparents blame it on us.

Selfish, selfish, selfish.

I love this thread so much. I hate Boomers. My parents exemplify the worst of their generation. They're hypocrites, who are spending every last time on themselves (luxury goods mostly), and don't hesitate to hint to me and my siblings that the money is running out and we will be expected to support them. Meanwhile, we're cheap because we drive Hondas, live within our means, and don't wear designer clothes.

My parents and inlaws haven't given my kids the time of day. Sure, they'll show up for photos. Sure, they SAY how much they love their grandkids, etc, but they don't lift a finger to help out anyone. I love how both my inlaws and my parents totally abandoned their parents, but they tell us constantly how once they are older they will probably move closer to us so we can look out for them.

My parents constantly ask me why I don't have a more prestigious job, despite neither one of them having graduated from college. I guess being a fed is not enough for them (not that I care). They criticize my husband and I for not sending them to private schools, when they had no problem sending me to horrible public schools and driving a BMW and Mercedes.

Okay this was a total huge rant, but UGH! The boomers are the WORST generation.

The older boomers got everything much easier than the later boomers. Jobs were plentiful and they made the cutoff for social security. The later boomers had to deal with the recession and a lack of opportunity due to the older boomers and a stagnating economy.

In my experience, boomers make abominable grandparents! They are super righteous and can't be bothered to spend time or invest in their grandchildren or support their children.

I agree and think there is a serious case to be made for this. The boomers have been self-indulgent for themselves, judgmental and unfair to their elders who went through hell thank-you-very-much, and exploitative to the following generations.

Just to take one example, look at the cost of higher education under the boomer generation's leadership - administrator positions and administrator pay have skyrocketed while nomadic adjuncts slave without benefits for rock bottom wages and no job security and the young people take on untenable debt to get a degree that won't get them a good job. Execrable.

Speaking as an X-er, the boomers are just a damn bad influence. They were always there with some bad advice that would lead you astray if you followed it. Next thing you know you have to leave the cult/go to rehab/get a real job/pay off the debt/ shake off the gender studies claptrap etcetera. La la la live for today mm hmm.

Recently some boomer in congress was advocating for reinstating the draft, I forget who. Oh excuse me, it was not okay for you but just fine for the suckers who were born after you, what? Typical.

Ha, there was a compilation of complaints about young folks these days being lazy and self-absorbed that started with an ancient Greek or Roman author and went up through the 1950s. Seems like there have always been some old people who don't like young adults.

These days, my favorite is the "Silent Generation". My 85 yr mom has five children she can complain to, and spares nothing, that generalization must have been in jest.

I think the boomers by in large are the most self centered generation of the last 100 years.

Gen-X'er here too and how we were raised compared as to how I've raised mine-I was practically feral! We ran unsupervised half the time. And that was with my folks having stayed married-I won't go into dh's divorced folks insanity. We are much more family-oriented with our kids and put them first.

And as the mom of a Millenial, my experience with them is a bunch of hardworking kids who have had to venture into a tough economy. Not a slacker among the group I know.

In my household, I have 92 yr olds, 63 yr olds, 43 yr olds and 8 yr old. Pros and cons for each.

Yup. And somehow each new generation is deemed worse and we are all going to hell in a handbasket. Its as old as time probably. I bet even the depression generation viewed the WWII ("greatest") generation as slackers!

My opinion-what's yours? I am a Gen-Xer and as a young adult I always read in the news we were the worst generation but I don't think that is true. Our generation had moms who went back to work but more importantly our parents divorced a lot. We were dubbed in the media as the ME generation. Personally, I think my parents generation was the worst "boomer". They were the flower children and they are the real ME generation. The Xers had to be extra vigilant as their parents were too self-involved. I see this with my parents and uncles/ aunts. My parents' generation believes in spending all their money before they die though they are being left huge inheritances by their parents WWII generation. The boomers grew up the most financially secure with assured pensions and social security. The folks of my generation want to leave a legacy etc...
