Seriously if they are doing inside renovation, most people won't see the work they are doing, so I don't see where is the incentive.

Oh come on. If the pizza delivery guy parked his car in your front yard for a few weeks, yes. This is completely different. We struck out the clause in our contract about putting a sign in the front yard. All work is being done in the rear, it was not necessary. they were upset about this and said that it impacted their bottom line but we didn't budge and they didn't offer us a discount as a condition for putting it there.

It doesn't bother me, as long as they remove the signs when they are finished with the job.

check the fine print in your contract, it is usually there. Do you want them to cover the name on their trucks when they are at your house too?

If you annoy them enough they will do the min to get the job done and be gone.

I agree that it provides incentive for them to do a good job if the whole neighborhood knows who's doing the work. I think its a good thing.

Allow it while they are doing the work and then remove it.

Totally normal, especially for larger jobs. A lot of times it will be included in your contract that you allow them to post a sign. What's the big deal?

If they have subs, helps them find your house. A lot of the subs who worked on our house (Arlington) were from much farther out (Loudon, etc) and not familiar with the neighborhood.

Obviously they could use Google maps…..

Still, this isn't really something to get worked up over. If you ask for a discount, they will just pull the sign--why would they charge less to NOT have a sign? Doesn't make sense.

I get it. When we did our first remodeling project, I had the same experience. We signed the contract for a small 3 week project that wasn't going to start for two more months and the day that I signed the contract I came home to a huge sign dug into our yard. We lived on a busy street at the time and I was really upset about it. I never thought to ask for a discount in the project price, but I did tell them to take down the sign until they had actually started the work. In retrospect, I should have asked for the discount too! If it bothers you and it isn't in the contract, just tell them to take it down because it bugs you and/or your neighbors.

I thought it was usually par for the course. In fact, I often bring it up when we're getting estimates. Something like, "I know we have a pretty visible lot for traffic and that you're going to put a sign up -- I'd like to see how you can help me out on your estimate as a result of all the free advertising you'll be getting." They'll usually come down on their price and then the sign doesn't bother me as much.
