Lyles Crouch outperformed Maury in 2014 scores/ratings. Lyles Crouch went up significant to #150 out of 1060 schools in VA. Maury dropped down to #184. LCTA is the top ranked elementary in the city. That being said we know several families who were able to transfer into both Maury and LCTA. I think enrollment was down overall.

Just right something that sounds reasonable - smaller classes, something the school offers your current one doesn't, whatever. Or just leave it blank and send in the form. Maybe they will call you to ask but more than likely they will just call to tell you when you can start at the different school and what to do to complete the transfer. They key issue in getting a transfer is space so make sure Maury has the space and that you have reached out to the Principal.

I administatively transferred my kids from MacArthur to Maury, mainly bc I knew they'd do better in a smaller school. And bc we can walk to Maury and MacArthur is across town.

Not typical, but not fair either. It makes the whole school board look abusive.

Just a thought OP - but if more families in your neighborhood stopped opting out for K, the school would start to improve. Families were able to transfer into Mount Vernon from other schools bc of the year round calendar. What type of families does that attract? The FARMS families who need steady, year round child care.
Less neighborhood kids meant more transfer spots open.

For an example - look at Maury.

More neighborhood students stayed, less places for admin transfers from J-H, meant a lower FARMS rate and higher test scores.

And to the poster bitching about a transfer to Lyles-Crouch - wise up, the school is not doing that great. You are better off trying to get into Maury at this point.

I'm pretty sure they'd transfer you to Jefferson-Houston.

People could request transfers out of Mt. Vernon if they wanted to opt-out of the year round calendar. Now that they are returning to the traditional calendar, it is not clear if you will be able to do an administrative transfer. I would call the school, but it's possible they might not have an answer for you, and it won't be clear until the school board votes what changes, if any, they will make to the transfer policy.
You should also plan to take a tour of the school, and attend a PTA meeting. I live on the other side of town, but they have a very active PTA, so it might be helpful to speak to parents of current students.

We are zoned for Mount Vernon, but are not sure about the Spanish immersion. Does anyone know if we can do an administrative transfer? And, if so, to what possible schools? Is Barrett a realistic possibility? (I assume George Mason and Maury are not.) This is all really hard to figure out from outside the system. Thanks!
