What grade is your child in? If your child is in 3rd grade or above, the rule might be different for those new to FCPS. I know of others who have gotten their kids into AAP outside of the regular application time frame because they had transferred in from elsewhere.

My kid is in 2nd grade. Haven't received FxAt scores or letter about in a pool yet.

NNAT benchmark scores will be posted officially for FCPS second graders on the AAP website by the end of this month, around the time FxAT scores are received. You then get a letter in the mail from your school if your child made the pool (which can be on the basis of EITHER or both scores).

As in years past, NNAT cutoff will probably be around 130-132 and FxAT has to be 95th percentile or greater-which usually boils down to around the same number of 130-132 or thereabouts. Last year they only reported a percentile and not a numerical score but the year before that the CoGat composite score had to be 132 for the pool.

Here is what I did: my DD was not in pool. I talked to the teacher and to the AAP resource teacher (together, in a conference). I asked if they thought it was worth pursuing. They both said that they thought they could put a good file together, and I should let the comittee decide. We parental referred, and DD was admitted.

We had this conversation at parent teacher conference (teacher brought it up). I would think if you haven't had this conversation, you should probably do so soon since the cogat scores should be out soon. Our school already has an AAP meeting set up in January on filling out the packet.

If your child is in pool, tell the teacher that your child is in pool and so AAP is a possibility and you want to get some feedback from the teacher about whether she/he feels it would be a good fit. You can explain in the conversation why you think it would be a good fit. If your child is not in pool, just tell the teacher you're thinking of doing a parent referral, why you think AAP would be a better fit for your child, and say you wanted to get some feedback from the teacher before you made a final decision. Don't make it seem like you are trying to convince them to give a good GBRS. Try to make it seem like you value his or her feedback, but be sure to point out why you think it is a good fit for your child.

His thought on ASP and GBRS related to your child? Not sure how to approach....first grade teacher mentioned on her own to us that she thought AAP would be a good fit for our kid...but haven't heard anything from 2nd grade teacher other than our child is pulled out for enrichment with the AART for math and language arts weekly.
