I've found that they will if you involve them in the hunt and prep.

Is that the trick? Do you give them your spears or do they have to make their own?

Let me tell you, it might seem like it's easier to just get them spears at target, but it totally defeats the purpose IMHO.

Nobody NEEDS a cupcake or chocolate bar. We want them, but we don't NEED them. People also live just fine without breads or grains.

Kids can get plenty of carbs from paleo. Kids on paleo needs lots of fruit, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes. They don't need grains.

Lots of kids are gluten intolerant and never eat bread or grains. They aren't malnourished.

That is very limiting for a child in terms of being able to socialize, to go on playdates, to join in celebrations etc. it excludes your child from many typical child activities (birthday party foods).

Also some kids are hungry on paleo as it can be hard to get sufficient carbs, especially for an active child.

Being that limiting also doesn't teach a balanced diet, to eat in moderation, to understand a range of food groups.

Doing paleo for yourself is one thing - but putting a child on that type of limited intake is not something I would do.

Nah, no evidence supports its harmful. And when kids are away from home, they can join in what others are eating.

We are paleo at home. We allow DC some sprouted grains and we don't limit snacks out of the home, other than avoiding hfcs and food dyes.

In the end it is probably an 80-20 split for what DC gets paleo v. Non-paleo.

Kids can get plenty of carbs from starchy veg and fruit. It is so much more important to keep feeding kids healthy fats for brain development.

+1 I'm doing the whole 30 now and this is my approach. When I make dinner kids get it on whole grain pasta, I get it on spaghetti squash. When kids eat pb&j I eat apples with almond butter. Just switch out some of the carbs your kids will eat with low carb alternatives for you. Plus, kids needs cupcakes.

Good luck! My DS is hooked on carbs -- and it shows. Won't touch meat of any kind. Barely allows me to put butter in his oatmeal. At 9 it's too late for him to embrace any kind of major change. We discuss the problems with overly processed foods, so he knows what's going on. But it will have to be up to him - maybe later-- as a teenager? That's when I started becoming diet conscious and experimenting. Hopefully he will make a change before a crisis.

Good luck OP!

Paleo is just meat, eggs, nuts, veggies, fruit and oils.

Do it as the basis of her diet but don't go all the way for her. Kids can eat carbs (grains) and need more than just veggie ones. If you have her eat too clean she will end up binging or sneaking or ending the diet and gaining weight. If you can't have it in the house let her get non paleo out at restaurants or on her own. Restrictive diets even healthy well intended good ones like paleo can. Trigger disordered eating and toying. But absolutely using paleo as a base is healthy in concept, just not an extreme version of it.

I'm planning on going paleo and having DC do it too. She will get plenty of fats and veggies and fruit and there are carbs there. Have any of you done paleo with young children? How was it?
