thanks 11:15. my guess is APS hasn't decided yet what to use the results for, or if they have they're not sharing with the parents. i think they treat the 1st grader NNAT test results the same way.

I'd ask the teacher but be prepared for the teacher not to know a lot about how to read the test. You might want to also ask or just ask -- I'm curious about some CoGat results, can you tell me who in Arlington best knows how to interpret it.

I say this because in my experience teachers don't receive training in how to interpret Nglari, IQ, CoGat tests. I don't fault them for this and don't want them spending time getting training on this either.

FUrther, for what it's worth, if you have a really high CoGAT or a really low one, or something that surprises you based on student performance also recognize that the teacher might not be noticing these scores or know what to do with them, and you as a parent should flip the equation and think about how to educate the teacher.

What I mean here is that a high CoGAT and low performance could be a sign your kid is bored (and needs more differentiated work) or that there is a learning disability of some degree. On the flip, if you have a low CoGAT you might want to find out if there are special services available.

I don't think this is a landmine issue. I just think people don't know why their kids even received the CoCAT never mind what it is. I think the kids receive the CoGat as a good screening process.

Hope that helps!

I'd tell the teacher about the suggestion and ask if it's an issue she sees in class also. If it is, ask her if she has any specific suggestions for what you can do at home. If she's planning to work with you DC in class she'll let you know. I think it's perfectly fine to ask the teacher her opinion. It's an assessment tool administered by the school so I don't see why the teacher wouldn't be willing to discuss the suggestions with you.

Would you ask the teacher about this specific suggestion, given that it's from a 3rd party who knows nothing about my child other than test scores? Don't want to come off as demanding or pressuring the teacher as i'm not sure what if anything the school plans to do with these suggestions as a whole.

I wouldn't ask the teacher. I would use the CogAT profile tool though.

thanks. those are pretty generic as well and mostly overlap with the suggestions that came home.

but i'm curious why you wouldn't ask the teacher. judging by the lack of response on here i almost feel this topic is a landmine among APS families.
