Subject: Where in NOVA or MD would you retire to?
Why not something along I-70 west of town (Frederick/Hagerstown/Cumberland) or along Rt 7 (Winchester/Leesburg)? Cheaper than the immediate DC area, still close enough to come out 1-2x a month or take nephews/nieces/grandkids to DC (well, not Cumberland), and plenty to do in all those areas. Also all of these but Cumberland/Hagerstown are okay commutes to jobs if you have to/want to work part-time in your field.

Actually, I think DC has more of these than Md or Nova. I'd look at some of the big complexes off Ct up in NW and around the cathedral. Watergate and the like in West End and Harbour Square in SW/waterfront. All have everything you mention plus fun, active residents' associations.

Why would you want to retire here? The cold weather, the crazy drivers, the cost of housing, high taxes. Why would you want to live out your golden years here?

Yes, assuming that by the time I retire, my marriage to my wife will be recognized in Virginia. We're in our 40's, so hopefully that will happen before we retire.

Two areas I love are Old Town Alexandria and downtown Annapolis. Clearly, I love the historical nature.
Neither is an option today, and we likely won't retire in the area, but those are the two that would be first on my list.

My friend's parents just moved down here to be closer to her and they are renting in one of the buildings in the newish Carlyle area of Alexandria. Walk to the King St metro, right by whole foods, there are a few other restaurants around there, they can take the King St Trolley if they don't want to walk further than the metro. They seem happy.
