Safes can (should) be bolted down.

And keeping jewelry in a safe deposit box guarantees it won't get worn. What's the point then?

We bought a fireproof safe at Home Depot and use it to store valuable papers (copies of our will, savings bonds, some very old photos that can't be replaced, etc.). We store it in a closet in the basement, figuring that if the house burns down with us in it, it would collapse on top of the safe and someone would be able to find it. We gave the combo lock code to our close relatives. Morbid, but since you asked...

Between us, DH and I have seven siblings. We have pics of our family along the staircase wall leading upstairs. There is a safe behind the picture of the meanest of all those siblings.

A good place for a safe is in the tower. When I have workers come into the palace, I always have my ladies-in-waiting take the crown jewels to the tower. I feel ever so much better.

We are about to have contractors coming in and out of our house for next 3 months. I'm considering buying a $150-$300 safe for my jewelry, passports and other small items. Any recommendations? I guess I would put the safe hidden in our closet...any suggestions on where to put it?
