Exactly! I totally agree. That's why I am on the fence about purchasing one. How do I avoid the prom look? Just make it looser?
I would check out Pinterest they have lots of hair how-toss to help you get the right look. I will also say a lot has to do with the cut of your hair too many layers and your getting prom hair.

My hair dresser told me you could use the curling iron like the wand, it wouldn't make a difference. You're still holding the ends and wrapping it around so you get that straighter look at the ends.

I think the point of the wand is not to curl the ends like you do with a curling iron. It's the undone ends that look more modern. I would guess you can get the same result with an iron, but maybe your hair catches more on the pieces of the iron and snags more. I wonder if maybe the side of the iron with the clamp is not quite as hot? Dunno. But if I had an iron, I'd sure try it out as a wand and see if I like it before buying a new thing.

The wand makes curls that are supposed to be more wave-like and softer. You can also just wrap strands of hair around a regular curling iron to get almost the same effect.

A friend had her hair done with a curling wand, and I thought it looked really cool. Can I get away with this look if I am over 35?
And, what is the difference between a curling wand and curling iron? (I mean, I can tell the difference in that one doesn't have a clamp, but would a curling wand really achieve a different look)?
