There are many reasons OP. Some of them include:

1. Some people are narcissists
2. Some people are autistic
3. Some people have asberger's syndrome
4.Some people are introverts (as others have mentioned here).
5. Some people are jerks
6. Some people are oblivious
7. Many more that I can't think of right now

I think some people are too concerned about other people liking them. Yes, it's good to have friends, and yes, it's good if your actions and words fall within the acceptable/appropriate range for being out in the world, but some people don't care if you like them or not, so they may come off as not interested. And some people can't multitask well, so if their mind is on something else, it's on something else, and not socializing.

I enjoy being around people much of the time, but other times I'm tired or stressed or focused on other things and sometimes I'm too tired or stressed or other-focused to be more than polite.

OP (and all you other extroverts), you need to

I don't like to socialize much at work because I am busy and I need to focus. If I take time to stop and chat, it takes me that much longer to get my focus back and get back on track.

I like to socialize, but not all the time. At school functions, with other parents around, sometimes I just get overwhelmed by all the people I know and could talk to.

I'm busy and don't have the time or the energy to make small talk with people.

I am raising a child like this. It is, in a work, shocking to me because it's so very different than
a) I am myself and
b) the way I'm trying hard to raise him and
c) the way society expects him to be, as evidenced by every word of your post OP.


I assure you, he was born like this and his been unwavering in his 11 years on earth. He just isn't interested in being social, and he doesn't need it to feel good about himself or life (he has plenty of interesting solitary pursuits -- ie, distance running solo vs. soccer, let's say.)


Also -- and I think this is important -- is IS kind, and he IS NOT a jerk. When the situation calls for it, he will be polite and funny and help and elderly woman cross the street or hand a baby a dropped toy.

But he doesn't "like" hanging around with people for the sake of hanging around with people.

Why are some people so needy?

You would probably perceive me as one of 'those people.' I am naturally an introvert meaning it takes a lot of effort and energy in my case to talk to people just for the sake of talking. I actually am very interested in people and have a good (small) group of friends, but if I do not know you well or do not find that we have anything in common or just plain do not like you, I likely will not make the effort to talk to you.

Are you the OP who said she doesn't have any friends in another thread?

I don't really like other people that much. Just about any interest would be fake and I don't like fake. I'm also an introvert so don't want to waste my engery on someone I don't like and am faking interest in.

Maybe they are an introvert.

Maybe they are busy.

Who knows.

Why do you care?
