I feel for you! But if you can't deal with law firms doing agonizing things to you, reconsider being a second year associate at one!

Holiday hiring is hard to do especially this close to Christmas. They will either hurry things up and get you an offer before Christmas or will take their time and wait until the dust settles from the holidays.

Lateral or entry level? Entry level should be very quick (during recruiting season, you should hear within a few days or its a no). This time of year messes things up a bit, though, because there's a committee that probably needs to meet to formally extend an offer, and its really hard to schedule a non-client non-holiday-related meeting right now. So particularly if you're a mid level, it could be a while.
