I think part of the problem might be that anyone can be a financial planner. You don't need any certifications (although there are certifications one might have). Be careful who you choose to manage your money.

And in other news, I'd bet that few lawyers have pre-nups, even though they advise all their friends to have one, and shoemakers' kids frequently have crappy shoes.

It's true. We know several FP who went belly up in '08, because they failed to set themselves up in case of an emergency. Some lots their homes and cars. So contradictory!!!!!!! My DH is a FP who is 50, and could retire tomorrow. We don't live in the big house, or drive in $80K cars, but we have no debt, house and cars are paid for, and write check's for our child's private school tuition. Money = Greed, as far as I'm concerned.

Don't Have a Financial Plan

NEW YORK (MainStreet) Perhaps financial planners should begin each client meeting with a disclaimer: "Do as I say, not as I do." While 40% of financial advisors say they intend to retire within the next 14 years, nearly half (46%) of them do not have a retirement strategy in place to accomplish that goal, according to a study conducted by the Financial Planning Association Research and Practice Institute.

The lack of retirement planning impacts an even greater number of advisors who need it most. According to the survey, two-thirds (66%) of advisors who are over 65 don't have a retirement plan in place.
