Not to mention, you may want to read up on the history of Northern Ireland....then you'd know that Protestant England were the oppressors and aggressors. Doesn't justify the IRA, but the view that Catholic beliefs are "nonsense" directly led to many years of conflict. You sound not only ignorant but like a total bigot.

Should have said "icon" or "figure" rather than deity, but whatever. She's definitely put on a pedestal, whether or not you want to call that worshipping.

OP, the actual answer is that the "catholic" church is part of the Four Marks of the Church.

Most Christian denominations, i.e. Methodist, believe they are part of the "holy catholic church" -- i.e., the "universal" church. It is part of our Affirmation of Faith.

Which is not the same thing as saying Christians are Catholics, and vice versa. This is a lowercase "c" in catholic, whereas "Catholics" are a different sect.

Not true. All Catholics are Christian but all Christians are not Catholic.

If somebody asked if I was Christian I would say "yes, I am Catholic".

Catholics believe different things than other Christian religions and the other Christian religions have their own beliefs but I have a hard enough time remembering all our teachings so not sure which/what religions believe in Mary as a Virgin. Just found out Muslims believe in Jesus. Who knew.

Mary's virginity is part of the miracle of Jesus' birth and is a matter of faith. All of the christian sects that I am familiar teach that Mary was a virgin. I would say that is not just a metaphor. Though what would it be a metaphor for anyway? Not sure you understand what that means.
