Don't know how far the house is to the station but you might be able to hear the calls being announced on the speakers at the station. We used to hear this on quiet days like Sunday mornings.

We live on the same block as the fire station. The fire station is on the opposite side of the street, backs to our street, and fronts a busy road. When the trucks exit the station, they go out onto the busy road and I don't notice it at all (if I listen I can hear them, but I don't notice them, if that makes sense. They don't disrupt the tv or anything like that). When the trucks return, they turn down our street to access the station, but they don't have their sirens or lights on, so it's not an issue.

Before we bought, we asked a couple of neighbors about it. Both said the same thing -- they haven't really had issues with it due to the way the station is situated vis a vis the houses on the block.

I live about 1000 feet from a fire station. Its never bothered me - I'm used to the noise just like I'm used to the airplane noise (also live 1/2 mile from National Airport).

Used to live near a fire station and they would turn the volume of their sirens down and use them intermittently when it was late at night and they were going on a call. This was probably to be courteous to the people who lived there but also because there wasn't much traffic to deal with while getting to the fire.

We lived blocks from the local fire station. PP is right, because they are not consistent, but fairly often (yet not regular) - we don't miss them at all. BTW, there are always sirens in the middle of the night, it seems. No thanks. Don't miss it one bit.

I grew up 2 blocks from a firehouse and a block from the main road the trucks usually needed, and the sirens never bothered us. Just part of road noise. Also helped with insurance, as pp suggested. Bonus- my brother saw plenty of fire trucks whenever he wanted when he was into them as a preschooler.

I live a few blocks from a fire station and it's really annoying hearing sirens in the middle of the night. However, if I found an awesome house for a good price, I would just deal with the noise.

because the fire station is on a major road and the house is about a block down and then around the corner on a residential street. seems unlikely it would normally go directly by the house unless the fire happened to be on that street. I've lived on and near major roads and I don't mind normal road noise either, but fire engines are very loud and not consistent.

Then it sounds like maybe it is a deal breaker for you. I'm sure it's not a deal breaker for some people.

I'm sure pretty much every possible detail/feature of a house or its location is a deal breaker to someone.

It really comes down to your personal preferences.

Is a house about a block away from a fire station a deal breaker? For what it's worth, the fire engines wouldn't go right by the house, but would be about a block away. I assume we'll probably still hear it?
