Another idea would be to stick with the 5ks and 10ks and pick out races that sound particularly interesting to you. There are fun themes to some races. There are race series through some running stores (Pacers and PR Running). Also, you could make it a fun activity with a friend/spouse or even the whole family.

There was another thread about races being meat markets. Perhaps if you start hooking up after races it will continue to motivate you.

You can aim for a longer distance, or continue to run the distance you are but aim for PRs (personal records). Nothing more satisfying than returning to the same race a year later and running it faster than you did!

Good job motivating yourself and being such a good example. Keep it up!!

How about a 10 miler?

Or just another 10k, but trying to beat your previous time?

You could always try different activities and challenge yourself within those activities. For example, take up stand up paddle boarding and challenge yourself to paddle up the Potomac and back in 2 hours. Or take up tennis, join a league and work toward winning a tournament.

Until a few months ago I led a very sedentary lifestyle. I have always hated sports and physical activity. However, this year I realized the toll my body was taking from lack of exercise. I also want to set a good example for my daughter. I took up running and trained for a five 5k (the only way to motivate myself was with that goal) so my workouts were based on the training plan. Now I'm training for a 10k so, again, the workouts are based on training to reach a goal.
My question is, what happens after that? I don't know if I really want to run a half marathon, but once the 10k is done, how do I set goals and stay motivated if I'm not training for longer distance? Training for speed? I'm so worried I'll lose motivation and fall back into my lazy ways.
