Isn't better to use quality butter instead of crisco?

Sure, but if you want it to taste like an oreo you have to use crisco

+1
We make vegan Oreos using Spectrum non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening (kid is allergic to dairy and soy; crisco has soy in it). We've used both the butter flavor and the original flavor of Spectrum - people generally prefer the filling made with the butter flavored one. Butter would be way too soft to use in the filling.
Here's the recipe we use: http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/10/24/healthy-oreos/

and yet that it what it is.

Vanilla Buttercream frosting is butter, powdered sugar and vanilla. Same deal, just less stable.

There's a great recipe for homemade Oreos in the America's Test Kitchen DIY book. The filling is made up of butter, shortening, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. I haven't made them yet, but all if the other recipes I've made from the book are fantastic. (DH and I are ATK and Cook's Illustrated acolytes.)

I LOVE oreos but they give me heartburn, like most store-bought baked goods. I find if I make things myself, however, I'm good. I have tried many recipes for homemade oreos over the years and I have a recipe for the cookie part that I love, but I have never found an icing that works. My favourite part about real oreo icing is how it is dense and hard - not spreadable like most icings. Does anybody have a recipe for this kind of icing? Thanks!
