Could be a mouse nest. Not necessarily dead mice. Do you know the smell of mice? There is a distinctive smell. I would say sweet is part of it.

We had the same and it turned out to be some mold from a pinhole leak in one of the pipes. Once we repaired the pipe and dried out the wall/carpet it went away. Check in your basement and see if you can find any evidence of moisture in that area. Good luck!!

Ack! Seems it could be many things- it doesn't smell how I would expect something "dead" to smell though. What did you do? Did you get it out somehow? We've been having work done in our kitchen and now I wonder if something got in. Our neighborhood is crawling with squirrels.

We had that in our basement. A rat had crawled in a vent from outside and died in the basement ceiling. Took many months before the smell went away.

So last night I noticed a faint, but distinct, sweet smell in one of our bedrooms. This morning I noticed a stronger version of the smell in our basement. We've only lived in the house a few months but this is the first time I've noticed it. Any thoughts? The gas furnace is old so I automatically suspect it, but no idea if my suspicion is founded or not.
