Subject: Swolen lymph nodes in the pelvis....
metabolically active regions are what show up on the PET scan. FWIW, the cancer is metastatic....kidney.

The most definitive answer is through a biopsy - needle or otherwise.
Where was the origin of your cancer? If it was breast, not metastatic, I'd say not to worry. If it was any of the GYN cancers, maybe explore further.

If they are in more than one area, that usually means infection like mono. But I'm confused about the "metabolically active" part. Doesn't that include infection other than cancer? It could be something like Lyme disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
Or maybe because you are fighting cancer now, the lymph nodes are just more active in general?

My Oncologist said the nodes are not showing up on the PET scan, and are below the size threshold to do anything. I have multiple enlarged lymph nodes....some in my pelvis, and some in my lungs. I figure as long as they are not metabolically active, I am probably ok. Next scan are in 6 weeks.
I do not think I have mono, has I had it back in 1992-1993.

Did your doctor explain in detail why he's not concerned? That might help alleviate your very understandable concerns.
The only people I know who have had swollen nodes in the pelvic area had an infection (yeast). And one had a very treatable type of lymphoma. A lymphoma related to untreated celiac disease. But she changed her diet and is fine. I can't remember what other treatment she had, if any.

I can definitely understand why you'd be worried about cancer. Could you have something like mono? That causes the lymph nodes to swell.

They are hard, Not really sore, but can press against some neighboring parts, which can get sore. I thought the worst (metastatic cancer), but my oncologist is not concerned, as my scans show the enlarged nodes, but they are not metabolically active (on a pet scan). Not sure if this is something to be worried about or not. I have cancer, hence the oncologist.
