I'm actually surprised you found a locksmith who did that. Most want proof that it's your home.

BTW, I would have called the police too, if my ex had done that.

Wouldn't a drivers license with home address on it be sufficient proof for a locksmith? I don't think they expect you to produce the deed.

You need to talk to a lawyer about what the proper course of action is in your state.

He is really angry, caught of guard and hurt right now. Don't take the car. Just call a cab or a friend and go. No need to antagonize an already vulnerable situation.

Don't tell him you're leaving. Just find a way and go. You can figure out your vehicle situation after you get a lawyer. Be safe.

Can a friend take you? Can you get a taxi?

A vehicle is not community property.

Where are you? Could it be community property?

If his name is the only name on the title, you can be charged with auto theft.

This is why when I married I insisted my name be on the house and at least one vehicle.

I don't think so. It would be too crazy. Also, what would he say- my wife stole my car? Or just report it- he would get in trouble for misinformation I think.

I had booked a hotel in anticipation of the announcement. He told me that if I took the car, he would call the police and have it reported stolen since it was registered in his name. He bought it before we were married. I am on the insurance as a primary driver though. If I take it, would I be arrested for theft of the car?
