Sometimes I'll have patients who mention a disease I have never heard of. Usually I ask them to explain it to me. It helps if nurses mention the disease on the triage form so I can quickly look it up prior to entering the patient room. It's really impossible to keep up with every single disease or the latest research (unless it's in my field).

Occasionally, I just plain old don't care about a particular complaint. Some patients think that every symptom they have is life threatening and want an answer for everything. Unfortunate, I have to much too do and many sick patients to see. I don't care about minor things and most people can see a PCP for it.

See a specialist.

Yes, there were times when I had to educate a couple of doctors about new studies, tests, meds pertaining to my condition. One was open-minded and took it well, the other's ego couldn't take it that a patient knew more than him about his specialty. I switched doctors.

doctors can't know everything about everything. They are often very knowledgeable in general and have expertise in an area but they aren't experts in everything. They see thousands of people. I would expect to have done more research on my own condition than my doctor. I expect my doctor to know what they know and what they need to research / look up.

I think that's what OP means. I feel that all the time like I have to do their job for them, do all the research for them.

Why would you assume they are smarter than you? I don't. I only assume they know much more than I do about medicine, but not smarter per se.

Like they don't have an investigative mind. I understand that they are overbooked and exhausted but there is no spark, no openness to learning.
