My school gets a lot of attachment parenting types (and it is less expensive than others) so the majority are sahm. Only two students stay for aftercare (though I work and don't sue aftercare). But I don't sense any judgment. Everyone seems pretty content with their decisions. Now, I haven't established any relationships there or been involved in any playdates, but there are likely other reasons for that.

Just because a parent is always around at pickup doesn't mean they don't work. I have a flexible schedule that allows me to drop off and pick up each day and after four years, a parent just turned to me in astonishment and said "you have a job?!" when she overheard someone asking about my work.

It's DC. Even when I was a kid in the '90s, there was huge amount of dual income families. I went to a JKLM school, and those who went to privates for middle and high school often had two working parents, because those were the ones that could afford to send their kids to private school. Either that or grandparents helped out with tuition. I wouldn't worry about it.

OP here. Really just curious. It seems many families are dual income, but I figured some are not. Just thinking about my DD's feelings about SAHMs since she has not been exposed to that all that much just yet. Also thinking about room mothering, etc., wondering about after school....it goes on. As for judgment - I more meant you are judged by someone no matter who you are and what you do - I'm not concerned with that part of it.

More WOH parents at ours. One income makes it tough to afford private school!

Beauvoir parent here: I think most families are both working parents .......although I'm a SAHM ......but that's my sense based on both of my kids classes.

In my kids' classes at Sidwell, about two-thirds have two working parents.

I think more than 50% at our school that have 2 working parents (closer to 80% if you consider part time work).

When our DC first started at school, it seemed like there were a lot of SAHMs - but after a while, I realized it is the same cast of characters - there are others I hardly ever see.

As you look at schools, find out how many children are enrolled in their after-care program. That will give you a number for comparison purposes. It won't include those who have 2 WOHPs with a nanny or au pair, but it is a starting point.

I'd say the majority of families at our school have one SAHP. Although DC is occasionally envious of kids who go home (or on playdates) immediately after school, she has developed closer friendships with the other kids who stay.

I am a SAHM and would same it is more the norm for both parents to be working. I don't think anyone is judgmental. It is what it is.

Probably depends on the school. Ours is about 30% WOH, but the numbers rise as the kids get older and there are fewer siblings still at home.

About 50-50 at our school. Not sure why you are already anticipating judgment.

In your estimation and experience, will our child be in the majority or minority with two WOH parents? I do not think it really matters in the end (there will always be some judgment regardless of any child's situation), but I am very curious. Please ID the school when you respond. Thanks!
