DH here. Maybe I can help.

First, when I say I really don't want anything, I'm being genuine. I want for nothing -- I'm not into gadgets, don't have patience for video games, am sick of screens, etc. etc. etc.. But I also understand it's important for you to be giving, and to demonstrate giving behavior for the kids. So, I've had to put some thought into it and I've come to the conclusion that things that give me NEW things to do, or create, or explore are best.

Which is why I do like the experiential stuff you mentioned. If you want to go that route again, consider woodworking lessons, sailing lessons, golf lessons, etc. Always fun. If he's into grilling, there's a BBQ course at the Greenbrier (although that's a bit pricey!)

Lately, however, I've had an urge to MAKE things. So, I asked my family for something that will allow me to grow chili peppers indoors -- a grow house, if you will, but not for pot! I also want a collection of sterile bottles, and some recipes. I want to grow the peppers and eventually make them into hot sauces. I want the kids to help me come up with names and make the labels.

Similarly, I'd like to dry home brewing of beer, although I've heard that's pretty involved. And you need space.

I also love my bike, so bike gear and stuff is always welcome.

Also, I could use some new boxers.

Hope this helps at least in some way

so funny, we don't get each other presents-doesn't make sense since we can always buy what we want-but my husband has become quite the gardener the last year-similar to what you describe. Never would have thought-he also loves hot peppers. I will say that I do go out of my way to buy his family nice gifts and am spending a lot of time making Chanukkah dinner for them tomorrow--they arrive in town tonight. They can drive me nuts but I know it is important to him so I am happy to do it. I will also make a second Thanksgiving dinner Friday since we are going to his sister's who eats a bit differently from us and he likes to have leftovers for sandwiches for a few days.

You might try asking him. I have a husband who is very hard to shop for and he said he wanted a new wallet this year with certain features. He has a perfectly good wallet but he wants a different one. I had no idea.

Husband here

I have to agree with ehguy above about trying new things and gettign em stuff to do that is great but the biggest obstacle in all that is time.

Getting the time to say go fishing without the wife saying really? you are going fishing?

So why bother saying we want to go fishing and try out the new gear etc when we get that back. So when we say nothing we mean it.

1. bj coupons
2. two new sweaters (one old one has a stain and the other has a hole)
3. Cooking classes (he wants to make dinner, has no clue how)
4. Swiss Army knife
5. Fancy bottle of brandy
6. iPad mini (he likes to read the news in bed)
7. Giftcard to his favorite (but expensive) hair stylist who he only goes to four times a year b/c of cost

I'm giving my significant other quirky gifts that he'd never buy for himself, like an eccentric shirt from Threadless.

Buy yourself something slinky/sexy/bordering on kinky. Wrap it up with a coupon that offers [x] nights of seduction. Use it as an excuse to be a little wilder and more wanton than you would normally be.

Either a new dress coat (his is almost 20 years old) or a MS Surface Pro to replace his netbook.

DD is giving him a Grinch t-shirt and a pocket watch.

Santa is bringing him his favorite cologne and some new boxers and other silly items, including a matchbox (or is it Hot Wheels?) car.

A waffle maker. He loves cooking, and we got rid of our old one because he didn't like the style of it, but we've never gotten around to replacing it.

And something else, not yet determined.
