We have always used our everyday porcelain plates and bowls for DD when she started eating table food. Crate and Barrel Bristro ware from our wedding registry... we still have most of the set even after 11 years. But DD still uses plastic straw cups for drinks.

Porcelain from the start, except when we go to Grandparents' who bought a cute set of Villeroy and Boch melamine dinnerware.

Kids are 4, 2 and 1. We've never used plastic, but we use a very basic porcelain plate from Crate & Barrel similar to this http://www.crateandbarrel.com/aspen-dinner-plate/s568678.

We've had exactly 1 broken plate and 1 broken bowl, which I think is pretty good.

We use Denby. DH rightfully so does not want plastic in the dishwasher and we don't want to hand wash everything so we use porcelain from the start. While the food gets thrown, the plates don't. But they can go in the microwave, freezer and oven so I think the are indestructible. We live in a small apt so space also is at a premium. Our small kitchen isn't clogged up with "kids" things.

Corelle from the beginning. I only use plastic if we're eating outside or on a picnic.

I have those ubiquitous Ikea plates that my kids simply love using because of the color. They have been eating off porcelain since they were 1 and perhaps have only broken one thing. They use porcelain for all formal family meals we eat together and the goofy plastic for playdates or snacks.

We used cute plastic to about 2.5, then started introducing porcelain. We haven't had a problem since. 4 year old still usually uses a plastic cup, though.

Although we have a few plastic plates from Target, we purchased extra Corelle to augment our daily use set. We have been using these with our twins since they were about 18 months old. We have taught them not to push plate off the table. And even with ceramic tile floors, we have had one or two accidents and the plates have not broken.

Plastic or porcelain? Since our kids are young we use plastic, sometimes cute theme dishes from Target. What age did you turn just to porcelain?
