No. Even if only part tuition is covered, the remainder is cheaper than daycare, nanny, and so many other expenses. Just like we got through those periods, we'll get through college. At that point in our lives we should have a lot more savings than when starting out, so it couldn't be harder!

18:20 again - I should add that the free tuition deal is not something that every university does. Some schools give only a discount on tuition and when I taught in the Virginia state-supported system, there was no discount on tuition at all. I don't know if that has changed but I doubt it.

Yes. But the money was part of an investment in a house which a family member lived in (at major discounted rent) which we sold after owning for many years.

Deal with the university was free tuition at home university or a third of the amount of the university's tuition if dd went elsewhere. We didn't really expect dd to go to the home university so we knew we would need more money but late in the game she decided to go there. We have enough for her to live on campus but if she had gone somewhere else we would have had to take out some extra in loans. If there's any left over, we may give it to her for grad school but it all depends on what other expenses there are along the way.

Yes. Tuition remission only covers tuition and that assumes DD gets in and wants to attend.
