Lady,

I just chimed in with two teachers I know who are Muslim. I didn't say I was obsessing over all of it.

But if you must know, after Ramadan, my colleagues asked that we donate to a charity. That's all I know!

In all my years of teaching - and having spent time in many schools - I only knew of two Muslim teachers. But yes, if my children had Muslim teachers, I would have recognized a Muslim holiday.

Did you give Kwaanza gift to black teachers? Or Diwali gift to Hindu teacher? How to pick up the appropriate religious Muslim holiday? Do you acknowledge Eid or Ramadan? Do you recognize sects? Shia or Sunni? How do you go and ask the teachers what religion they practice? I can't figure out who is Jewish many times? Should schools share this information?

Is Kwaanza for AA teachers or all black teachers?

We are giving Hannukah gifts to my DS teacher this week. Do what you are comfortable with!

Yes, give Hanukkah gifts out this week. Your kids can draw Hanukkah paper if you don't buy rolls of Hanukkah wrapping paper.

Hanukkah is not a major jewish holiday. It is not equal to Jews. Generally adults do not receive gifts like that for it. Stick with generic holiday thank you gift.

At my son's preschools -Jewish, I'll add - we collected money toward Hanukkah gifts.

I give gifts in December too and do not specify any specific holiday. Just a thank you with possibly a generic holiday card.

I usually give a holiday gift in December sometime. The gift does not reflect any particular holiday (example - no Christmas wrapping paper).

So- Thanksgiving seems the most appropriate time to give them a gift. Regardless of their religion.

I think we should consider them a gift of gratitude to our teachers and not specific to any holiday..I would guess a teacher's religious preferences may not be known to her students in all cases.

I think you could do either.. The only thing that would be inappropriate would be a Christmas themed gift but clearly you are thinking more than that. My mom was a teacher and cast off ornaments every year..all well intentioned though I am sure.

I'm Jewish, and taught first grade in public school. I always really appreciated it when students recognized I was Jewish, and gave me a gift during Chanukah, instead of Christmas. Whatever you give is super sweet. Personally, I'd go with 20, not 25, or bake cookies or something instead.
