My in state nephew did not get into Tech and chose Purdue for engineering. I don't know if it meets your son's criteria, but nephew and his parents are pleased.

Did you try look at College Confidential's website?

Perdue? Drexel? Georgia Inst. of Technology? (Drexel is in Philly though). Look at Pennsylvania for schools that are more self contained and not urban with that campus community feel. It has a ton and most have an engineering program.

DC is a Junior and we just vivisted Vrignia Tech a few weeks ago. He loved it. He would like to be an engineer. His grades are decent and he has a good chance of getting in, BUT it is not a slam dunk.

What other schools are out there that have a similar vibe or feel? I am thinking other land grant state schools, but some like Penn State seem so much bigger. Tech is big enough.

1) Non-City Campus and a campus where the edges are easily identifiable.
2) University town next to campus.
3) Co-op opportunities
4) Walkable/bikable
5) Decent on campus and off campus housing
6) Themed on-campus housing. DC liked the option of an "Engineering dorm".
7) Good engineering school and decent hard sciences
