What does your last sentence mean in context of op’s Question?

Peter Pan aside, still read most every night to my kids - 9 and 10. Hope it lasts forever. They are both avid readers, so no worries that this is stunting their own skills. Have read a lot of the classics to the kids, but view them in a lot different light now (as PP wrote about the racist and sexist elements of Peter Pan).

Is the book as horribly racist and sexist as the stupid Disney movie?

My stepmother read to my brother and I through the end of 5th grade. It's the only pleasant memory I have of her.

Usually, it allows the child to enjoy a story that might be just a bit above their independent reading level and it helps to develop listening skills. I like doing group reads with my kids where we all take a turn reading a chapter. We talk about the vocabulary, word pronunciation, anything about the story that needs clarification and we share our thoughts/opinions on the story with each other.

It depends on the kid. Check it out of the library and read a few pages - get a feel for whether or not the story would hold their interest. If not, you can return it and keep it in mind for a later date.

I think it's great that you're still reading with your kids, btw.

Why wait? It's an awesome book. It's a lovely idea to read aloud to your kids.

I hear its better to wait until 10. We still read to our kids even though they can read to themselves. They are 8 and 9. Do others out there think its best to wait?
