I'm OP. To clarify, I went from $1.4 down to 900K (at the bottom of the market). The loss was mostly from stocks and a declining real estate portfolio. Since that bottom, I slowly ADDED a bit more to stocks. My real estate picked up last year. I had tenants that paid lots of rent with almost no vacancies and no problems. Our salaries increased quite a bit. I lived temporarily outside of NOVA which lowered living expenses. I had $1 million in very low interest debt, which increases my exposure to stocks and real estate. In hindsight, I wish I had borrowed even more. I have excellent credit and could have used my properties to go further into debt.
I'm rather amazed that the few things above resulted in such a fast increase. I did not take major risks to do this. I believe others that took bigger risks could have beaten this increase.
