My 6 yr old first grade DD told me today that her friends know how to multiply and she wants me to explain it to her. Now, it's first grade and I know multiplication is not being taught yet.

3rd grade is standard but some, not all, 2nd grade teachers will start introducing it in the spring.

I'd estimate that about 3/4 of the kids in our kid's class takes math enrichment courses outside the school. The kids work at their own pace. When they master one concept, they move to the next. Its more likely that your daughter's friend is learning math outside the school.

Montessori teaches multiplication and division as a standard part of their kindergarten program. If your school has a high number of kids that enter in 1st grade, those kids will have a good foundation in those skills as at 6.

Yes, skip counting in second grade, and arrays too, I think. Both are multiplication.

Yea, its beginning of 3rd grade. They teach them first as area and drawing out the groups of items. For example 4 groups of 3. They also do division around the same time, although I don't know how they taught that, they just seemed to jump into it.

If she is interested, teach her but make sure she has all her addition facts down first.

Go ahead teach your daughter by yoursel (especially if your daughter is willing to learn). There are plenty of ways to make kids memorize multiplication tables. Just google it.

3rd grade - there will be 1st graders that know how to multiply - but they won't be covering multiplication under 2.0.

3rd grade, introduced in first marking period.

When DS was in FIRST grade at his British school overseas, they started multiplication tables. Now he has to go over it again in 3rd grade.

And people wonder why the US trails behind other developed countries in education.

My 6 yr old first grade DD told me today that her friends know how to multiply and she wants me to explain it to her. Now, it's first grade and I know multiplication is not being taught yet. I guess it's entirely possible some kids have started to get this (if they have older siblings or their parents are working with them). My DD was adamant that I start teaching her how to multiply. I'm going to email the teacher for some ideas of how to start. Does anyone know 1) how multiplication is taught under 2.0, and 2) where I can find that information?
