this is usually done once a contingent offer is in place. tell them that you are happy to let them speak to your current manager once an offer has been made. this is pretty standard.

I'm currently interviewing while employed and every single interviewer only seems to care about getting a reference from my current manager, even though I put down other references.

The organization you are interviewing with will understand, as this happens all the time. I was in this position a year and a half ago. I told my boss when I had a verbal offer because of some scheduling stuff (I wanted to tell him in person, and he was leaving for 3 weeks). He provided a wonderful reference. I trained my replacement. Everything worked out just fine.

I wouldn't tell your supervisor until you have an offer. I would ask for those that have left the org. to be a reference, not ones still working there.

Any tips for me? My industry is specialized and they are interested in me because I work for a large organization with a good rep so I will have to talk about them during interview. Also I would like to ask a couple managers who I have worked with who either have left or are leaving soon to be my references vs my direct supervisor. I will tell my supervisor provided I am a top candidate and think that an offer is likely and that I would seriously consider it. Does that sound ok to you? Anyone been there done that>
