I always thought it was an affectation; her attempt to sound vaguely French, cultured, theatrical and sophisticated gave her this breathy, dramatic and unusual "accent."

Not an accent, just an affectation.

What a bizarre interpretation of the phrase... if you just made that up, I like it.

As far as I know, the mid-Atlantic accent comes from states that are in the middle of the Atlantic coast of the US (not the north, not the south). The only time "mid-Atlantic" means in the middle of the Atlantic is when you're talking about the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

My girl cousins from Greenwich, CT had elocution classes at their private schools. I am blown away by their public speaking--speeches at weddings, etc (even the dumb one).

No, it was real to sound like it was from snobby old money. (Or money, in any case.)

It's so, so Eastern (and I say that as an Easterner). Combo of Rhode Island and Hamptons, Long Island.

It seems sort of British in a way. Maybe she took voice lessons.

Hmm a quick look at her Wiki page says she spent her early years in East Hampton, NY and then after her parents divorced she split her time between McLean, VA and Newport ,RI. Went to Holton for 2 years and then Miss Porter's in CT for the rest of high school. It also looks like she spent a year of college taking classes in France. Seems like her accent is probably a combination of all of those things. Plus whatever type of training she received on how to speak in public/be her husband's supporter.

I've been watching a few of the Kennedy assassination shows this weekend. Just wondering what kind of accent Jackie has? Where did she grow up and is it a typical accent from that area?
