I suggest starting your own writing/editing business online. Set up a website, samples, etc. and advertise your services. Set yourself apart from freelance writers who share your speciality.

Odesk and the like are great... But doing your own thing is the way to go for higher income and better jobs. I've been freelancing on the web for over 6 years, fwiw.

I weathered a brief period (6 months) of unemployment using Elance. The money wasn't great, but it filled a gap on my resume, and I continue to do consulting work for some of the clients I acquired on the site a year later.

I think Elance is pretty similar to oDesk, but I prefer the layout and bidding process on Elance. You have to bid yourself out low for your first 10 or so projects in order to establish a positive feedback rating. After about a month of using the site, I no longer had to search for contracts because I received so many requests to bid. Best of luck.

Get a real job?

I have recently taken a stab at some freelancing work by signing up at odesk, flexjobs, and freelancer. Mostly aiming at research, writing, proofing, and some minor translating. I have a BA and MS both in Liberal Arts disciplines.

I would love to hear suggestions, tips for success/getting hired from anyone who has done this sort of work before. I'd been trying to land traditional work/daycare for our infant but recently learned my husband's job will be uprooting us in the Spring. Freelancing seems to be the best option for us for now.
