I used to get them from out of town, so I can't be of help, but they had an apricot and cheese roll which was amazing. Does anyone know if this type of roll is available in the area? Thanks.

Kosher bakeries make them. I'm pretty sure the kosher store in Rockville (Motti's?) has the poppy seed version, not sure about nut though. Damn, I so want one now.

My mom used to make them for the holidays and I don't really like them but I need something to take for Heritage Night at my kid's school. I have no desire to make one.

This is my family's traditional Christmas morning fare! My grandmother always made it Christmas Eve, let it rise overnight and then baked it that morning. She called it poteca or walnut roll.

SO good, now I can't wait for Christmas!!!

I used to think that. My husband loves them and my MIL does the same thing. But I found after a whe I started to like it.

My MIL from NE Ohio makes one every Thanksgiving and Christmas. She always serves it still slightly frozen and it's sooo boring. I'm not really sure how you go wrong with walnuts, cinnamon and sugar but I find it kinda bland.

No, but I'm originally from NE Ohio and Linda's Kitchen made individual pies for my wedding and they were amazing.

My family near Youngtown calls that pastry a colache or kalachi? Not sure how it is spelled, but it is Polish.

Where is there a Polish, Czech, Hungarian or Ukranian community in DC? Maybe find a Polish church that does a holiday bazaar?

there use to be a polish catholic church in virginia that sold these and pergoies for the holidays.

My brother makes them now - they are just as good as my g'mas! It can't be that hard. he's got two small kids and works full time.

His secret is crisco in the dough. (which very well could have been my g'ma's secret, it just took us 20 years to figure it out)

OP, for a poppy seed pastry (which is basically what this is), I would look at Middle Eastern or Eastern European/Jewish bakeries for something similar.

For other kinds of nuts, try looking for "rugelach."
