My pediatrician told me this, too. I was stressed to no end. Around 3 months, we got so she would reluctantly drink an ounce or two from a bottle after much fussing as long as I was nowhere around. Other things that helped: trying when she was calm, warming the milk to just slightly warm, me getting the hell out of dodge, using a faster flow nipple (but not too fast; we ended up with avent size 2 nipples). at first she did best if held in a cradle bfing-like position; later, that would upset her and we did better putting her in an infant seat. And when I went back to work a few weeks later, she took a few days of barely eating and then started chugging it down. So, the pediatrician was right after all, but I certainly stressed about it!

A friend of mine swears her daughter NEVER took a bottle, but they were able to introduce a sippy cup of some sort pretty early and just hold it for the baby at first.

My DD NEVER took a bottle but did take a sippy cup when she was just shy of four months. Babies are born with the ability to drink (lap really) out of a glass. It's more work but it's not impossible.

Keep working the bottle but also try a sippy. There are some sippy cups that are bottle-ish but more acceptable than a bottle.

If you are there then she smells milk on you. Leave the house.

+1 neither of my kids would let the nipple of a bottle into their mouth until I went back to work. Hoping I learned my lesson the first time around I started early on with the second. Didn't help. Looking back I think think it was the most stressful thing I went through the whole first year.

He won't starve. You may want to line up reinforcements for your husband when you go away.

Good luck. This too will pass.

I mean, "same urgency if you are present"

She may never take one from you. DH should do it. You should leave. Wherever you go, you bring your breasts, so there's not the same urgency for the baby.

Be prepared to give DH some time off after you return because he will need a break from the screaming.

Keep at it. I know it's insanely frustrating. But the onkybwaynis to be consistent and persistent. DD refused the bottle and it took us about a month and a half to get her to drink from it. What worked for us was having DH be the sole bottle giver. He would start with a room temp bottle and a pacifier. Gave DD a pacifier which she would willingly suck on for a minute and then he pulled a switcheroo. Initially, DD would spot out the bottle after a few seconds, but eventually she began sucking longer and longer. One day ou of no where she drank an entire bottle. Also agree with others that if he gets hungry, she is likely to eat.

My nanny got her to take a bottle. My nanny requested a certain nipple which was the natural action nipple. Those seem to be discontinued though. But I think you leaving and having someone else try different nipples may help.

Search for other posts on this. There have been a TON.

We had to heat ours up much warmer than I would have thought, and I had to be out of the house.

Try different positions for feeding her too. A lactation consultant showed me that she could dance my 3 month old DD around the room in an awkward upright snuggled position with her head tilted back. There was an element of distraction and also maybe she liked the milk dripping down her throat.

My husband saw the LC do this and was able to mimic the crazy dance. Eventually, she would take the bottle from everyone but me. Now, she takes a bottle from me too... although she is still a bit nuts about breast feeding at 8 months.

My DD did the best with Avent natural and classic nipples, although eventually the Medelas were fine. This will work out as long as someone continues to try. Once she learns to take a bottle, don't let her go a whole day without practicing her bottle skills. It feels pretty stupid when the baby rejects the bottle all over again!

Me leaving the house altogether, all day is what finally worked for us. But DD took the first bottle, offered about 2-3 hours after I left with no problem. She would ONLY take the Playtex nursers with latex nipples though.

My 3.5 mo old DD will not take a bottle. I feel like I've tried everything - different bottles, milks (BM and all sorts of formulas), positions, times of day, etc. DH and others have tried giving it to her. We've tried when she's not hungry or tired. This has been going on for 3 weeks. I NEED her to take a bottle when I return to work in a month. Any advice? Unusual tactics that worked for you? I'm about to leave town for the weekend and have DH make a cold turkey switch.
