Not only are those specialties vastly different in practice, there is a huge spread in length of training between them (3 to 10 years).

Is your friend military and that's why they don't have loans? I'm a fed physician and make $150k, but come home every night in time for dinner, no call and no weekends and I enjoy my work so its worth it for me.
