A mom saw the "shooter" in the woods with a 'sniper rifle', and made a 911 call the police. NCS, Sidwell and St. Albans were locked down within minutes. The BB gun was found in the back seat of the car and the car was traced to the boys. The boys were taken out of class in cuffs and the incident was widely reported with dramatic video on the web.

STA acted quickly. The boys were barred from school for the remaining few weeks of the year (the lacrosse season had already ended) but allowed to graduate. Both boys faced DC gun charges. If anything, STA's quick action was deemed too harsh.

You have posted this version before and there are some inaccuracies. One student played lacrosse, the other didn't. They were suspended for the remainder of the school year, which included about four weeks of the spring sports (including lacrosse) season. They were allowed to participate in graduation once the academic year had ended, and they kept up with their work. Some people thought it was too harsh, others thought it was good that the school reacted strongly. Most people in the community were very thankful that a tragedy had not resulted (e.g., local police or even secret service firing on young men that were perceived to be carrying a high powered rifle with a scope; the "replica" looked identical at first glance to such a rifle with scope). There is never full agreement on disciplinary decisions but I don't remember a big backlash, and one of the nice things about STA is that they make decisions and move on.

Do you really want to go there? Do you really want to compare bad behavior at STA with Prep? Really?

That is a HUGE handgun. With a scope no less.

I'm so far removed from the gun culture that I'd have a hard time distinguishing a real gun from a replica. Either one would scare me and I'm not sure if I'd feel more safe if the gun was being fired by a high school boy instead of in a holster of a school employee.

Not sure how big of a deal this is OP. Obviously as a member of the community I would want him fired but I don't from find this to be a huge scandal.

The story does not say he is a teacher. It says he appears to work in the buildings and grounds department. There's a big difference, IMO.

He is from Frederick. Don't they have gun classes in their local schools? Maybe he got confused.
