I tip on takeout at small family places where the person who hands me my food is likely to have been the one packing it, but not on takeout from big chains.

Do not tip on take out, they need to remove the tipping line from credit card receipts.

Please charge me more I hate tipping.

I won't tip on takeout, either. They didn't "serve" me.

I don't tip on takeout, the extra line on the receipt is standard, it will be printed out whether you need to tip or not.

I usually tip on takeout, but I think 10-15% is fine. As for a lot of these other transactions, yes, I think tipping has gotten out of hand. I know people in the service industry are underpaid, but still. I would rather we raise the minimum wage (and bring waiters/bartenders up to minimum wage) than have every establishment putting out a tip jar.

Its pretty standard to not tip on takeout.

Sounds like you are tipping too much, and a lot of it out of guilt, not their expectation.

Really? Thirty years ago I was a restaurant hostess, responsible for bringing the take-out food to customers and I was always astounded by how many people would give me a buck or two. Then again, this was in a lower middle class, working class area -- where people tended to tip well cuz perhaps they'd worked for tips too.

I don't tip our cleaning lady (except at Christmas) and wouldn't tip the furniture delivery or landscapers, either. They don't work on tips, as far as I know. But now that you have started the trend with your cleaning lady, it would be awkward to stop!

For the places with the tip jar- I swipe my card instead, and that eliminates the problem. Nothing to sign on those small transactions.

OP here @15:17

I know that's on me! I have a love/hate relationship with this forum.

But you do get paid at your job! Servers $2.77 an hour unless you leave a tip.Others make at least minimum and don't always need to be tipped. So servers are going to find a better paying job and who is going to serve you or make your drink?
For the OP, stay home, pick up your own food and how often do you get your furniture delivered. You definitely over-tip, but that's on you.

There have been numerous articles on this in the general media over the years - in short, tipping seems to be going out of control here in the US while other countries do not tip as much or as widely.

Since I was not brought up here, I still do not quite know who to tip and how much. In a restaurant, I tip 20% if everything was practically perfect, if merely average then 15%.

I feel like tipping has gotten out of hand. Anyone else feel the same way? I like tipping when the service is good at restaurants or if the delivery man is on time with my food, but lately I feel like I'm tipping everyone and their mom. Is it necessary to tip the cashier at a restaurant when you're the one picking up the food? Whenever I see the tip line on my credit card receipt, I feel obligated to and if I don't, I feel like I'm getting the stink eye from the cashier. I feel like whether the service is good or bad now, everyone expects a tip. A waitress friend of mine told me that no matter how bad the service is, you should always tip 20% since that's the server's only source of income and then complain to the manager. WTF? If service is bad, the tip should at most be 10%...since when does bad service mean you should get a 20% tip?

I just feel like tips are expected now for everything and anything service related! No one actually works for them anymore. Here's a list of people I have tipped: servers, delivery guy, furniture delivery guy (4 hours late), cleaning lady (every two weeks), landscaper (on top of buying them lunch gave them 100 bucks more), shampoo girl, always tip at starbucks, dairy queen, baskin robbins (all those places that have a tip cup out)...the list goes on and on.

I know this is my fault...I shouldn't feel obligated to tip anyone, but I always do for some reason. Anyone else feel the same?
