A good indication that a child is asleep while I'm holding them is twitching.

My 9 year old twitches a lot in his sleep, and has since infancy. Arms, legs, shoulders, etc. He never stops moving when he's awake, and it seems to continue in his sleep. He's healthy, happy, and well rested.

Does he talk with his hands while awake? Generally move around a lot? Maybe he is just dreaming about something and acting it out. Of course our brain releases chemicals that block us from acting out but we can still twitch!

My DH does this. I don't think it is a reason to worry.

I may be over reacting, but I noticed that my 6 yr old DS' hands twitch at night when he's in a deep sleep. It doesn't appear tht he's dreamin, but sleeping comfortably. Has anyone else seen this? Is it big deal?
