I use an HD antennae for sporitng events, press conferences, and the like. Then I download the seasons of shows I like on my Apple TV. The cost works out to significantly less than cable.

The major downside is I can't get sporting events on ESPN. I either need to watch these on my computer or go to a bar.

Haven't had cable in 8 years. Netflix, amazon prime and Hulu for TV. Internet through RCN and cell phones. I would like a land line but there is no copper line service to our house anymore so landlines are through fios/Internet which means it will go down when the power is out anyway. I'm thinking of getting a google voice number and rigging it with magic jack to a phone with wifi and having as the "house" phone. It won't work when the power is out either but I don't have little ones that can use a phone yet and its free!

Has anyone succesfully been able to negotiate such a deal with Verizon? Alternatively, I can keep the internet only. But I still need landline. Is anyone aware of any cheap landline options in MD?

Also, I plan to get a Roku box. I still would like to watch some shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC. Can I get them from ROKU?

Thanks in advance.

You can watch the major networks in HD using an HD antenna box (plugged into the cable input on the TV). We use a Terk brand antenna box. Then, we watch movies and cable TV shows on the Roku box in HD using the Amazon channel, which IMO is much better than Netflix. It's faster, and it has all of our new shows that netflix doesn't. Hulu has commercials, and we don't use it, but I am not sure if it has all the same content as the Amazon channel.

With an Amazon prime membership for $80/year, you get the free Amazon prime channel content, plus free shipping, plus free books for a Kindle. Its a great deal.

You could always try a MagicJack (or any of the other similar alternatives) for a phone too.

No landline. Totally unnecessary in this day and age.

I disagree with that. We have a landline because we have multiple people in our household, not all of whom have cell phones, and one of whom has a life threatening allergy. I can just imagine a scenario where I am out running errands, my husband goes into anaphylactic shock, and my young child is digging through pockets/etc trying to find a phone to call 911, after she's potentially helped administer an epi pen to her dad. A landline is a low-cost safety feature.

What may be slightly less necessary is my insistence that my landline be copper. My landline is always on and we have a corded phone in the kitchen. Our phone is not "on until the backup power supply dies." The power can go out for 5 days, and we will still have phone.

I am risk averse, so I think my belief that a copper landline is necessary is likely to be overkill for some people, but I question the situations where people think landlines aren't necessary at all.

We cut cable television, but I'm unwilling to cut the landline. Call me a paranoid Luddite!

OP here. Thank you. I agree with you that landline is unnecessary, but we need it for the fire sprinkler system. Alternatively, we can set up a wireless fire and alarm system, but we need to pay about $200 upfront and $20 more each month. I am hoping that there are cheap landline options out there.

I don't have a landline. I only use my cell phone.

I would like to be cable/internet and tv free. I think it's such a waste of money but my husband thinks he needs it.

$2100 a year would make a nice little Christmas fund.

Netflix, HD antenna, huluplus

Aereo is supposed to come to DC this year but I'm not sure they'll make that

a digital antenna might be your best option, depending on whether your shows are available elsewhere

We have cable internet and you still get basic cable through that (ABC, NBC etc). Cox won't tell you that, but it's the norm.

We have a DVD player that has wifi and it connects to Netlix, so no need for a Roku box. LOVE this set up!!
