Holy moly. I was on the fence about converting to a gas fireplace. That sealed the deal. Please don't follow up with an article about the toxicity of gas fireplaces.

Yes ... and cooking fires are a main source of illness in societies where they still use them. http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/01/harmful-hearths-open-fire-cooking-threatens-lives/#.UnV72ha1wzU. One exposure to a firepit is probably not going to do any lasting harm, but it really is very little different from exposing your baby to cigarette smoke. I don't really care either way, but recognize the hypocrisy if you are an "OMG don't smoke near my bay bay!!!" person.

+1. Just use your common sense. Bundle her up. Have her pretty far away from the fire and upwind and she'll be fine. Besides if she's not ok, she will let you know -- you'll notice her getting fussy, coughing etc. within a minute and can bring her inside.

Maybe make sure the stuff you are burning is chemical free? Stick with logs, not glossy paper or anything too odd.

I wouldn't bring a newborn out. I don't think it's the same as cigarette smoke, but you won't be able to keep her out of the smoke. Even upwind, there's going to be some smoke. And the smell would be overwhelming to a newborn.

Actually, I would be very careful of exposing her to the smoke. You probably wouldn't let her sit around next to a bunch of people smoking cigarettes - the firepit isn't that much different. Just wait until she is sleeping and grab a few adult minutes out there with a glass of wine.

I can't think of any reason not to. Maybe keep her out of the smoke? Have fun!

My husband wants to do one last hurrah around the fire pit tonight. Assuming we bundle her up, any reason why newborn shouldn't be out there?
