We did it for our 3 kids. Fascinating information. We found that one of our kids has a potentially life-changing gene, so I am very glad that we did this. We read up on all the pros and cons prior, and take the risk assessments given with a grain of salt (our child will be a good runner? Okay...). The genetic information, however, was the most important received.

It is my understanding that there is a federal law, GINA, that protects against discrimination in employment and health insurance based on genetic info. Individual state law may protect against discrimination in life insurance, etc. So wether you are protected would depend on the laws of your state.

I don't know--seeing a genetic counselor first might make sense, so you don't freak out, you know what happens to your data and your insurance risks, etc.

Is anyone concerned about this information being used for insurance purposes in the future?

We'd like to do it, but we're hesitant.

We've done it. It was great! I love seeing the genetic information, lineage, and possible family relationships. It's been well worth the price. No regrets.

Due to a possible familial disease, it was also a relief to know I wasn't a carrier of the currently-known genetic links.

I did it. It's interesting to see some of the genetic indications, as well as genealogical ones. It's important to remember that everyone has things that they are at risk (or above average) for, and things that they are less than average risk for.

That said, it's also important to remember that it's by no means a complete picture, but just a small snapshot into your genetic history.

I'm glad I did it now that they brought the price down.

Actually we plan to do it for all of us - me, DH and 2 kids. Meant to do it a few weeks ago but you know how life gets in the way.

Fascinating story about it and the founders in Fast Company a few weeks ago. Its this story that got me interested in the first place.

What did you think? Glad you did it? Why or why not?
