K is the proper metric abbreviation for thousand. M is the proper one for millions.

M and MM are incorrect. Some people think they are using roman numerals, but MM = 2,000 not a thousand thousands.

M is what is used in the finance/investment world. No one uses K.

One of the definitions of 'grand' is: the cardinal number that is the product of 10 and 100.

I know G = grand, but it was really weird to see it used in a news report!

Their audience would not recognize "K".

Oh, and I should note, checking out Fox News is a curiosity thing. I know it's silly fake news, but the real stories referencing dollar amounts using the shorthand of G? That seemed too much!

Because they are not real news. It is slang.

Is it meant to be all gangster or something? I thought using K was the way to refer to a thousand. Is there something about the target audience that makes them do this?? To be clear I'm talking about when they're describing money, like 50G to mean 50,000.
