No, they were using debit cards. The money was taken directly from their accounts and they had valid id (presented to cashier when requested).

No, this is about 19 and 21 year olds shopping at Barney's using credit cards. Not cash. Credit cards. They are not Oprah. Nor, do I imagine, that Barney's calls the cops if a 35 year old professionally attired AA walks in and makes a purchase.

However, I do imagine that Barney's has seen its share of attempted use of stolen credit cards. And, I would guess, that the stolen credit card use may have been by people in the same age/race range as the persons in the article.

Oprah was in a store for 5 mins and her complaint is that the sales person suggested she look at something else.

This is about blacks buying expensive items and the mall security stopping every black person who has a shopping bag from those stores

Insane. I would happily sell my products to people with money! Why bother running after black people when they obviously had the money? What went wrong with this company?

Not surprised. Racism is alive and well in 2013. I hope the victims can get punitive damages from the stores and personal damages from the employees who did it. Not only that, it would be good if the stores were required to spend a lot of time and money training their employees not to discriminate and commit crimes against innocent customers. And to pay for awareness ads publicly pointing out what they did and offering an apology to their victims.
