They should be moving up reading groups several times in between mClass administrations. Primary teachers are trained in using running records and oral and written comprehension in daily small group instruction to determine when students are ready to move up a level. When I taught first grade, students on average moved up a level every week or two based on their progress during reading group.

Students in 2nd grade are given the mClass test (which is the same idea, just administered on a Palm Pilot and reported centrally) three times per year: Fall, Winter (January) and Spring (May). The level on your child's report card should not be the same level that your child was tested at in September during the mClass window. It will reflect the current level at which your child is reading instructionally (with guidance from the teacher) based on the teacher's data from reading group.

That is interesting. Can they move reading groups not based on mclass?

Yes, MAP-P is a math test which from what I can tell they don't use for much.

MAP-M and MAP-R are given in third grade.

Does MAP-P just test math? Or is it reading too? I know that MAP-R starts in third grade but my child took MAP-P this year in 2nd.

Readling level -- number, then letter grade are assessed each marking period, towards the end. This starts in K.

MAP-R scores are done three times a year -- Fall, Winter Spring. This starts in 3rd grade.

But they have already assessed them. So when do they assess next? Before report cards?

Is this true for K as well? How do you find out what level they are assessed at? Is it on the report card?

It is Fall, Winter and Spring. I think is very common to drop. From what I understand, the actual test is the same at end of first versus beginning of second grade. Reasons for dropping I think include not writing over the summer and the subjectivity of the test. My son also always scored better when he was given non fiction versus fiction.

I have a second grader. Her reading level dropped from the end of 1st to the beginning of 2nd. I know this is often because the writing has to keep up with the reading level starting in 2nd. I am wondering how often they are assessed (or when they will be assessed next).
