My dd started field hockey at age 6. It was at Mater Amoris Montessori in Ashton, MD. The coach is no longer there (story already addressed on other forums). We used to have to go to York, Pa on the weekends for games because fh wasn't as big in this area.
Maybe you could find a h.s. or college girl to coach a little startup team for you OP. There used to be indoor fh in MD...don't remember the name.

KOA's field hockey program actually starts in Kindergarten! Winter clinics start in January: http://www.koasports.org/programs/field-hockey/clinics/. My 3rd grade DD played field hockey with KOA this fall and had the time of her life.

KOA but I think they start at 2nd and 3rd grade. League play is nearly finished though they may offer something indoors during winter...

Any responsible field hockey program will require mouth guards. And IMHO they should encourage, if not require, eye protection too. The younger kids lack control of the stick when shooting and passing and sometimes the sticks come up high. Also, when they converge on the ball there are sticks and elbows flying everywhere. The girls all get used to mouth guards and the ones who play lacrosse all get used to eye protection too. It is a non-issue and they have a blast.

Great Falls Field Hockey starts in 2nd grade. That's the earliest I've seen. And the season ends this week.

No, field hockey really doesn't start until about 10.

I believe that KOA offers field hockey in Montgmery county. This season is almost over (or has already ended).

Subject: Field Hockey Classes?
OP here. Also, does anyone know if the youth classes or leagues require the use of a mouth guard or eye protection? That was a big turn off for me for lacrosse, as I wasn't looking for any sport that a little dangerous.

Subject: Field Hockey Classes?
Does anyone know of any program, clinic, or classes for field or floor hockey.
I have a six year old and I wanted to sign her up for a team sport. My local rec center has soccer, basketball, and a co-ed T-ball. My daughter does not like soccer, doesn't want to do a sport with boys, and the basketball timing isn't working out for my schedule. When I was screwing around on Youtube with her, she saw some college field hockey and expressed interest in it (probably because they wear dresses).
I saw a pre-school floor hockey class but I haven't seen any floor or field hocky classes for 6 year olds girls. Does anyone know if they exist in this area? Not looking for anything too competitive, but to teach the basics to see if it is something she'd like to pursue.
